Dr. Butterfield is a graduate of the McGill University Dental School, and the University of Connecticut School of Medicine, whereupon he obtained his DDS and MD degrees, respectively, Following medical school, he proceeded to train in General Surgery, followed by completion of his training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Butterfield practiced as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Connecticut prior to returning home to Canada.
Dr. Butterfield is a Fellow in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with the Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and is Board Certified with the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is licensed as both a dentist and a physician in the State of Connecticut. He is a Diplomate of the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology, and a Fellow of the American Society of Dental Anesthesiology,
Dr. Butterfield is the Chief for the Division of Dentistry/Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery for the Ottawa Hospital, and is an active surgeon with CHEO's Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Disorders Team. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Ottawa, and is Co-Director of the Surgical Sleep Apnea Clinic at the Ottawa Hospital.
Dr. Butterfield has published in numerous professional journals and textbooks, and presented locally, nationally and internationally on topics including Orthognathic (Corrective) Jaw Surgery, Cleft Surgery, Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Dental Implants, Maxillofacial Trauma and Outpatient Anesthesia.
Dr. Butterfield is extensively trained in all aspects of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, including Wisdom Teeth Removal, Dental Implants and Bone Grafting, Corrective Jaw (Orthognathic) Surgery, Cleft Palate/Craniofacial Surgery, Surgical Management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Management of TMJ Disorders, Trauma Surgery, Outpatient Anesthesia, and Management of Pathology and Reconstruction of the Head and Neck.
